Niteroi, Brazil

Niteroi is located just across the bay from Rio de Janeiro, and shares some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. The name "Niteroi" (Knee-teh-ROY) is an indigenous term meaning "hidden waters". The city has Niteroia long and glorious history going back to the mid-1500’s. During most of this time it has served as a commercial, political and tourist center to its state and region.

The city proper has a population of 500,000, with another 1,000,000 in the adjoining area. Niteroi is ranked fourth for quality of living in Brazil. It has a well-developed mass transit system, vibrant downtown, shopping malls, several Niteroihospitals, public and private schools, a federal university and several private colleges, museums, theaters, sports arenas and public libraries.

Numerous religious groups are present in Niteroi. Twenty-seven Roman Catholic churches dot the city’s skyline, some dating back several hundred years. Baptist, Evangelical and Charismatic churches are also present and experiencing significant growth. In addition, there are 33 centers of Spiritism, a unique blend of African animism, indigenous beliefs and Roman Catholicism. The presence of so many diverse and growing religious groups is a strong indicator of the high level of religious receptivity among Niteroi’s residents.

For many the city of "hidden waters" remains a "dry and weary land where there is Niteroino water". We believe God is raising up dedicated servants to share the Good News of Jesus, the Water of Life, with those who thirst for Him in Niteroi. Will you pray for this effort? Will you financially partner with those who accept the challenge? Contact us if you have any questions, comments or suggestions: info@niteroimission.com
